Security Box® File

Security BOX® File is a data encryption software. It protects files and directories on laptops and workstations connected to a network. It also offers irreversible data deletion functions.
Security BOX® File is a very easy to use software working under Microsoft Windows.

Security BOX® File grants your security in several ways :

  • Normal or automatic encryption

Security BOX® encrypts files and directories by a simple right click on the mouse or a drag n’ drop from the active window of the software.

Security BOX® File allows to create encryption lists (and decryption lists) to facilitate the daily management of sensitive data. The encryption of a directory or a *.doc file may be, for example, started automatically every day at 7:30PM or started automatically when Windows is shut down.

Security BOX® File also allows to forbid the encryption of some files like system files to prevent risks of misuse or mistake.

  • Exchange of encrypted files

Encrypt for a correspondent

The use of the public key encryption system supported by Security BOX® File allows to encrypt files for one or several correspondents, without having to communicate any password. Files are encrypted with the recipients’ public keys and only them will get to know the information, since they are the only ones to have the appropriate private key (see "Technology and state of the Art" paragraph).

Encrypt for a correspondent who does not have Security BOX® File

Two possible options in this case :

Self decryption
The self decryption function allows to transform a normal file in an executable, containing the encrypted file and the adequate program needed to decrypt it.

One has to chose a password for this file, communicate it to the correspondent (by telephone, mail email, …) then to send the file.

Encrypt using Security BOX® Freeware format

Security BOX® File also allows to encrypt files for correspondents who have Security BOX® Freeware (Security BOX® Freeware can freely be downloaded on the internet).

To communicate in a safe way, one must send the file (as an attachment for example) and then to communicate the password which was used for the encryption. This technique has the advantage to allow a file transfer without going through a self decrypting file (.exe file).

Indeed, downloading a file from the internet and using on your computer .exe files, which you don’t know their origin (like those received as attachments in emails), may represent a potential source of danger. Several viruses happen to be hidden in .exe files and the confusion for a distracted user may be easy.

Security BOX® File has optional complementary tools (called extensions) which reinforce the active security of the workstation.

  • Security BOX® Disk extension :

Security BOX® Disk extension securizes created or placed files on a virtual disk. The implementation of this option does not modify the use of the product, the user will only have the impression of using another hard disk on his machine.

It completely looks like a hard disk but it also brings :
A permanent hit on the fly security (all the information stored in it are automatically encrypted)
Best accessibility available, since the virtual disk appears automatically once the user is connected and disappears when he disconnects from Security BOX®.
The strong level of security induced by this mechanism (data remains permanently encrypted on the hard disk and only the piece of information requested is decrypted on the memory) associated with the comfort of use make Security BOX® Disk extension a real advancement in terms of security and ease of use.

  • Security BOX® Shredder extension :

This extension of Security BOX® File deletes the residual traces of the files deleted by Windows to avoid their potential recovery.

The mechanism consists in re-writing over a previously deleted file and therefore to crush its content. The number of re-writing passes and their attributes is configurable to grant a good security level.

It is possible to delete irreversibly (or to shred) files by a simple drag and drop or by using the “send to” function of Windows. It is also possible to create an automatic procedure by creating a “cleaning list”. This function can be configured at fixed hours, every X minutes or on user disconnection.

Administration and deployment

Security BOX® File and its extensions are built to be simply installed on an "autonomous" mode on an individual PC.

The software, however, is also built to be automatically deployed and at a large scale by automatic setup software.

It is possible to pre-configure all the options of the software in order to :

  • restrain the choice of encryption algorithms,

  • choose the key length to be used,

  • select the level of password renewal and list files,

  • protect some system files against accidental encryption or shredding
